Xp Oem Toshiba Lap Top Crash

I have read and read and my head is spinning from the confusion :(

I am trying to make a bootable cd for my toshiba laptop (neither microsoft or toshiba will take responisibliity :( ) i downloaded a patch for Office 2003, it downloaded, went to restart, but shut off - i turned it on and had a black screen w/ an error saying files were corrupted...

Toshiba says i have to just to a system restore.... but i have files I MUST BACK UP FIRST.

I have been reading about slipstreaming

and i'm just confused. Microsoft and Toshiba both told me i had to find someone w/ an xp disk b/c it cam preinstalled on my laptop - i can't use the floppy disks b/c i don't have a floppy drive. and the toshiba restoration disk will only make my computer like new

a friend of mine lent me their dell xp reintallation disk and i have been following instructions from:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=23915&st=10

so i will have a bootable disk (though i pray i never have to use it again!)

I tried to download spyspunks srvpack.in_ and srvpack.dl_ but it won't let me

also, it said to delete the folder SVCPACK folder - but i did not have this folder and i have show hidden views enabled

i've also read about all these patches and what to change... and I just don't know WHAT to download anymore :( i'm so confused.

I am a newbie and i apologize if this posted somewhere else. i just want to get my computer up.

thanks for any help

nope. it does nothing. :( i can't safe mode, can't try to restart from an earlier time - nada nothing but this black screen w/ a file missing or corrupted

windows xp could not start b/c the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\system32\config\system

toshiba didn't even know if me getting a xp disk would even help me. but i just want to back up my files.

I bought a USB caddy for laptop hard drives for exactly that purpose! you can get one for about £5-£10 from ebay here

If you can wait a few days - it would be the safest bet to retrieve your files and then perform a clean OS install safe in the knowledge you already have your files ;)
