Ive just read a new edition of MaximumPC (special edition) and came across alot of items I will be typing up and sharing with the rest of you in the next few days. I found this little trick under a section on how to avoid people from breaking into your system and protecting your pc. Ive never seen it posted (unless i missed it) so I thought i would share with you:

If your on a single , non-networked machine, you dont require File and Print sharing or NETBIOS over TCP/IP. Go to your control panel, network connections, select your adapter, and right click and select properties. If file and print sharing is installed, UNINSTALL IT!. While your there, click TCP/IP, go to properties, then select advanced and select WINS. Go to the bottom and select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP."Even if you have a firewall that blocks NetBIOS ports, you should still disable this funtion on a stand alone machines exposed to the internet. With NetBIOS enabled, anyone on the net could have access to all your machines secrets (OS,CPU, and RAM amount, current username, your account and more) through port 139
