Disabling Automatic Driver Installs?

Does anybody know if it's possible to prevent windows xp from auto installing drivers for new hardware? Whenever I install a new piece of hardware, winxp tries it's damndest to install some outdated driver, since I am a freak about drivers, I always go and download the absolute latest drivers from the respected hardware sites. Is it possible to make winxp just disreguard the new hardware and leave it as "unknown", so I can just go manually install the drivers of my choice in the device manager?
