DVD movies... no sound?

I noticed that if i don't install AC3 filters i don't hear any sound from my DVD movies.

my question is two folds.

1. what is the silent install method of AC3.

ok so the silent intall switch is /s /d

2. is there an alternative AC3 filter that is better?
