logonui.exe application error

i keep getting application error messages and i can't execute some programs

message says

The instruction at "0x55903010" referenced memory at "0x00000056". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program.

can someone tell me what is going on here?

What version of windows you runnin?

I have come across this today on a PC, they only thing the user has installed recently is SP2, as an upgrade not a clean install..... so I wondering what else could have caused this.

Eventually you get through to the desktop by pressing enter on all of the error boxes and then log in, but I just get a blank screen, can see the wallpaper and can get the taskmanager but nothing else. I also tried to run explorer.exe from the task manager but to no avail and the same error messages.

PC is a P4 2.8 with 256mb and 80gb HD, it is about 5 months old and was working fine before the SP2 install.... but could just be a coincidence.
