Hi,

I just performed a Real-World install of my latest XPCD, and found out, that following the first or second reboot (I'm not sure which, but definitely one of them) my DVD-Drive dissapears from My Computer.

When I Press the eject button on the drive, it DOES eject.

I don't know what is causing this, anyone have any ideas?

I'll post my regtweaks below.

EDIT: It still works (ex: I can put in an XP CD and it will boot), but it is not recognized anymore once I get to Windows.

The strange thing is that I specifically checked after I installed XP, and it WAS there. Then I check again now, and it's gone...

EDIT2: I did some googling, and someone suggested checking the Device Manager. I did and under "DVD/CD-ROM Devices", my "Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R6012" has a YELLOW EXCLAMATION POINT.

When I Click on Properties, I get this:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Anyone have any ideas?

Ok,

Some more googling produced a RegTweak to solve the problem:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

Following this entry to the reigstry, I reboot, and the DVD-ROM is back.

BUT, I get this error message:

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD

A problem in the system has been detected.  You need to restart to resotre your system.  The application was stopped when you pushed cancel.  System check will be performed again when the PC is restarted.  Exit all running applications and save any work before pushing OK button.

Do you want to restore the systems and restart the OS?

OK   Cancel

If I press cancel, I continue in Windows, and the DVD drive works, but I get this message every time I boot up

If I press OK, the system restarts, and the dvd drive is gone again.

Microsoft Knowledge Database says two things could be causing this:

1) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;314060

some CD Writing utilities cause this, and apparently, Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is causing mine...

2) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...3&Product=winxp

bad drivers for the DVD casued this...

BUT, I have had Drag'n Drop on my system before I reformatted to try my XPCD, and I don't know why this is all-of-a-sudden happeneing now!

HELP PLEASE????

Third party packet writing and XP do not mix well at all. No matter who creates the software. It has cost me alotta problems in the past. You are only asking for problems installing these. Should leave these to the 9x users.

XP has the the best packet writing software built-in.

a06lp, I don't know if you have a sony laptop, but i have the same dvd drive and software. drag & drop dvd caused the same problem. Go to sony's website regardless. There have been numerous updates to Click to DVD or D&D DVD. Also, firmware updates that may be of interest.....

**These may not work if you do not own a sony product.

Sony does a hardware and/or model check.

I have a TOSHIBA SATELLITE 2455-S305

I dont know what to do? should i install these updates? they are NOT on toshiba's website.

are these things that have to be installed with every format/re-installation of XP? or is this a one-time update?

also, i dont understand it. i have been using D&D for the longest time, i simply installed it the same way, following my clean install of my XPCD. what could be so different that isn't working and causing this problem?

the firmware updates are highly recommended and need only be done once. I'm not sure why d&d isn't working.....

check your cd's dma mode. did you also install new drivers like intelinf chipset v6 for example. Did you install a different burning program as well? perhaps the aspi layer was overwritten. did you build the xp cd using nlite? maybe you slimmed it down too much....

try nero's registry checker and general clean tool. It fixes a lot of cd related problems (not just nero's)

ok, you just said a lot of stuff i did not understand:

the firmware updates are highly recommended and need only be done once.
Are you sure this is OK for me to install even though I don't have a sony? I have, like i said before, a TOSHIBA SATELLITE 2455-S305
check your cd's dma mode.

what is it? how do i check it? what should it be?

did you also install new drivers like intelinf chipset v6 for example.
Not that i know of...
Did you install a different burning program as well?

Yes, Roxio 6. But i always had both. the only difference is that i installed them, this time, using SILENT switches, but why would that change anything?

perhaps the aspi layer  was overwritten.
what's that?
did you build the xp cd using nlite? maybe you slimmed it down too much....

no nlite for me. hardcore do-it-yourself.

try nero's registry checker and general clean tool. It fixes a lot of cd related problems (not just nero's)

is that free? is TUNEUP UTILITIES 2004 better? that's what i use for regcleaning now... whats the best regcleaner?

EDIT: I downloaded the two top firmware updates (not the region one), and neither would install because it says i have the wrong computer model. It's because i dont have a VIAO...

hmm...

did some searching, i thought maybe it was a driver problem, but:

Information solution survey

CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drivers. Toshiba uses standard EIDE optical drives (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, etc.) in its PCs. No drivers are available or required for use with Windows operating systems. If you are having difficulty with your optical drive under Windows, please contact Toshiba Tech Support, or try reimaging your computer with the factory software image that came with the computer.

Guess not...

but then i found this:

seems to be the same useless microsoft solution...

the solution is so simple DON'T Install Roxio!

problem solved. try it.

install nero 6.6 instead, smaller foot print, faster interface.

by the way Roxio has been sold of my Adaptec. so u won't be getting

anymore updates soon.

I have a sony laptop z series, and toshiba a20 and i hv no issues.

Roxio is a know culprit off the "disappearing DVD or CD" it is all over the net.

truth is, i don't even use roxio. i only have it in my unattended because D&D can't do *everything*....no bootable CDs, no dvd-maker, etc.

whats so good about nero anyway?
