16 bit applications problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am using Windows XP Pro SP1.

Since recently I am having problems with 16 bit Windows applications. When I try to start any of them, nothing happens. No error message. Nothing.

It does not matter if I double click the exe file or if I use the shortcut.

There is an another thing, which may be related with the problem. The propreties for the exe file do not contain Compatibility tab. It looks like Windows does not consider this file to be executable.

An example of non-working application is the installation for GetDataBack for FAT.

I have another installation of windows on the other partition, and I do not have such a problem.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Not 100% here but if there is an option for this somewhere, is it possible that you have disabled the Compatibility Wizard (and associated stuff)?

:S

You were right. Some time ago I removed some Windows components using XPLite. One of the removed was Program Compatibility Engine, and everything from Windows\AppPatch folder was removed.

When I restored this component, my problems were solved.

Program Compatibility Wizard was also removed, but it has not been needed to restore it.

Thanks. :D
