Ive heard about windows xp pre sp2 ... what is that? is that an sp2 version or is an update to SP2 needed afterwards anyway?

A Windows XP pre SP2 is a windows installation or WinCD that DOESNOT have installed or has included Sp2.

Its usually the term given to windows updates that were released before SP2 came out.
