missing network adapter icons

Recommended Posts

dont know if anyone else is having a problem like this but after installing SP2 i noticed that my network adapter icons have gone missing. they are missing from my network connections folder and the device manager. but if i do an ipconfig in dos i can see it and the ip it has. i still have normal network functions but no access to it. IT HAS DISAPPEARED?!?!

i searched around and found an article on the MS site which says that there is solution to the problem. so i tried what they suggested but the problem is still there.

anyone seen this before? can any one help?

thanks for your reply zbeta.

i have seen both articles and a couple of other ones.

none of the solutions proposed have helped me with my problem.

not sure what else to do. im almost considering re installing winxp.

ive restored back to sp1 and i still have no network icons, but can see it from ipconfig.

any other suggestions before re installing windows?

You could perform a repair install. I was forced to do this once to a system at work in order to correct the exact same symptoms. I swapped and reinstalled NICs, and even removed and completely reinstalled tcp/ip and everything else related to networking that I could find. Nothing corrected the problem. I never did isolate the exact cause, but the system is still running today, and the repair install was performed over a year ago. Of course, your mileage may vary. Good luck.

Thought I would just say that I have had exactly the same problem - after installing SP2, my Network Connection icon for my lan has vanished. The connection is still there and is working correctly, and ipconfig is reporting that everything is OK. I've tried everything suggested in Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles 825826, 254631, 273461 and 269019. However, the problem still persists. I'd like to avoid doing a repair install and I've contacted Microsoft to ask for support.

I would be interested to know whether your repair install worked.

If I have any success, I will try to post it here!

I also have the exact same problem and similarly tried the various fixes in the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. Nothing worked so I restored my system to its pre-SP2 state. Unfortunately, the problem persisited after the restore. I've been searching for a solution and came across this thread. If anyone finds a solution I would like to hear about it. I will continue my search and if I learn anything will report back.
