I use a custom boot image to show at boot (the one i use is this one), and i packed it with makecab and put it in the i386 folder. it boots with this one the first time, but the second time it's back to the original.

what is going on?

i do run several update at t-12

Since the first time it boots, your custom boot-logo (that's what its called :)) is used, it looks like you've done everything fine.

I'd suppose you're installing a critical update (which replaces the kernel) during GUIrunonce, between the first and second boots. If not, then you need to provide more details for anyone to help out.

That, and another one before that (was superseded by 826939).

Anyway, junk all hotfixes/roll-ups, slip-stream SP2, hack ntoskrnl.exe - and you're back in business. :)
