Windows explorer problem

I have XP proffessional installed, I can open explorer.exe but when I click on anything....it closes down. This only happens if I open it via my computer or using windows key + E or through the start menu. If I open my documents I can use explorer as normal or if opened from the short cut button on my keyboard I'm OK. This never used to happen and its a recent fresh install, I don't know what has changed, but its annoying! Any help would be appreciated.

Mine does the same and also initializes my scanner. Been happening for awhile now, but haven't been able to figure out what causes it or how to stop it.
