I've got a serious bug on one of my unattended builds, and support.microsoft.com is proving useless!

Basically the unattended install of Windows 2000 SP4, all hardware drivers, and Citrix Metaframe goes through without a hitch. However, during the final stages of the install, IE6 is added to the mix (long story but has something to do with one of the applications that we need to host on this server).

The IE install completes although it seems to take a while (looks like it's trying to access Windows Update even though all the packages are there on the server). However, when the server has rebooted and we log on again, we noticed a problem with Explorer. Basically we open Explorer in "folders" mode and the folders pane is completely blank!

And I do mean blank! There's nothing but a mass of grey when you open the folder pane ... no folders, no icons, no drives, nothing ... nada ... zip ...zero.

Does anyone know what this problems is, and if so, can someone suggest a fix??

(For your reference, I've looked on support.microsoft.com and the only stuff I got was about a corruption in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main but that didn't work when I tried it. Edit:Q192315 is the number I was given.)

Oh, and before I forget ... I need to try and get this sorted before the weekend!!

I install IE 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 during the GUI mode phase of setup from CMDLINES.TXT.

I use IEAK 6 to create a custom IE build with just the components I need and add those to \$OEM$\IE

This works perfect every time for me.

You can also try XPCREATE. XPCREATE is capable of building a Win2k CD as well as a WinXP CD. The 2KCREATE thread covers all the gotchas you'll run into. This should allow you to create a CD for this weekend. If you're so inclined, you can always go back to your CD to try and figure out what went wrong when time allows.

Can you explain me why you use IEAK to customize your IE6 installation.

As i know, under Windows 2000 SFP is activated and protect most files for being replaced.

When we install a new version of IE, 5.5 SP2 or 6.0 SP1, we can't choose the components to install, only the IE core, OE, WAB and SCRIPT are updated.

It's been a year or so since I last used IEAK so I'm a little rusty on it...

Yes, that's true but if I recall correctly, by default IE 6.0 SP1 will install a bunch of components that you may not want, such as AOL ART file support, international fonts, Flash etc. IEAK allows you to specify which of these extra components, if any that you want. It also allows for setting a bunch of other default IE settings and can update the install with the latest service packs and patches. It can be very useful in a corporate setting where a proxy is used for example or to set the location of the mail servers etc.

So all in all I've found it's a useful tool to use for my installs.

One thing to bear in mind is that I install on servers only, so that the defaults that I use may not be suitable for use on a standard users workstation...

Is there any way to disable the install of Outlook express when installing IE6.0 on clients. Can't find any parameter for that in the IEAK. Maybe it's possible to add a line to the INSTALL.INS manualy?

We have depoyed all our clients with [COMPONENTS] OEACCESS = OFF in the unattended.txt file. So we have no trace of the Outlook on our PC's a wannt it to be that way...

The "Oulook Express" is not in the "Components to install" window in IEAK...

I had this problem too, until I moved my IE 6 silent install to be kicked off by my cmdlines.txt file.

This resolved the problem. To solve your problem in the interim, search Google for 'folder or pane greyed out', basically there is a .dll file that needs to be registered using regsvr32, I forget the name of it but you should be able to find it with the above search.
