Greetings,

This laptop worked fine until the KB2419632 update failed, now XP HOME SP3 won't boot

Reports windows\appPatch\drvmain.sdb corrupt or missing

can't boot in safe mode

original CD is XP HOME SP 1a

It will boot off the CD, then into "Repair mode"

How can I get this machine back to it's functional state ?

I've seen many issues with this hotfix in web searches, but no way to fix the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

drvmain.sdb is a file used for compatibility with really old software. It shouldn't stop your computer from booting. I remember I used to delete the complete appatch folder with no ill effects. I just tested it again now by deleting drvmain.sdb and my XP boots up fine. I think you have other problems considering the update failed. That update is for MDAC and has nothing to do with app compatibility.

This is what I would try... Boot off your Windows setup disk and access the recovery console by pressing R when prompted. Run a chkdsk /r and see if it finds errors on your OS drive.

I did try that, Chkdsk reported something was wrong, but couldn't fix it. And wasn't clear on the problem.

I'll try connecting the drive via a USB adapter and run "Error-Checking" on the drive from the host system.

This problem may have more to do with the update failing to install.

I'll let you know what I find, at least now I know what the drvmain.sdb file is used for.

Thanks
