pid Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Hallo,Situation:we have 3 old Laptop with w98se on it.I have all offiall updates installed, the network is ok. (we need this Laptop´s for old Hardware with only windows98 drivers in our business)Now i will / must install the MS remote desktop client on it.The installion of the Client software was no problem (no errors)I have installt rdp-client-software from a Windows xp cd, and the client from MS (in Ger and eng) and from the Revolutions Pack 9 sitehttp://rp9.win98.nl/ and from chip de http://www.chip.de/downloads/Remote-Desktop-Connection-Software-6.0_13005861.htmlAll Web Wites say that the Client supports w95/w98/wme/nt4.0 ???But all clients make the same error:"The Remote connection has timed out. Please try connecting to the remote Computer again! The error comes after i have set the ip Adress from the RDP Server an send it with conect after 1-2 Minutes.Tested:I have tested on win 98, win 98se, w98se with all officel updates, w98se with Windows 98 SE SP Version 3.0 BETA 4 from http://www.nandlstadt.com/win98sp.htmand i tested on a WNT sp4 workstation all with the same error.i have testet fom the w98xx / NT clients on the following rdp Server: xp with sp2, xp with sp3 and w2003 server SP 2allways the same error. All server are pinging from the w98xx clients to the servers. The firewall was deaktivated when iam tested on the rdp server. The rdp server are working, and connecting from xpsp3 workstation with remotedesktop client is possible. wondering:i have testet from the w98xx /NT clients with a very old terminal server client software (Version 4.0).??? This version connect from all clients to all rdp Servers ??? The problem here is, this old TS software Client supports only 256 Collors - this is not enough for us.Question:Has anybody a w98xx system that can connect a rdp server with the MS RDP Client that supports more than 256 collors ?What is to do that this will run ?Is there anny other / alterantive (no MS RDP Client) that run on w98xx and connect to the RDP Server ?Please help, and sorry for my bad englishand thaks for your support.PID
allen2 Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 The XP RDPCLI works fine on W98SE (i just tried a rdp connection to a W2K3 R2).Most likely your rdp server isn't listening or there is a firewall (or another thing) blocking. You could try the Win32 port of Rdesktop if you want to try another client.
pid Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 Hy allen2,this is strange ?i have 3 Laptops (all w98se) and 2 desktops (w98se) in our Lan, all with the same problem on the rdp Servers (xp Workstation with sp3 and a w2003 server).some questions:1. What ist the SP status of your Server ? (i think that the rdp beginns at SP2 on the xp-plattform) under SP2 it is no problem.2. which Version has your xp rdp client ?3. which updates are on your w98se ?4. Which Country Version do you have ? with which sequrity update (128 bit coding in w98se) I think there was a Problem at that time with the 128 bit in europe (in Europe was only 56 bit allowed, in USA 128 Bit installed)When i tested there is no firewall aktiv (the w2003server was complete new installed with all Updates (as virtual maschine). There is no other "ather think" because i can connect the RDP Server from xp Clients with sp3 !Thank you for your Support, and for the alternative client, i will test it - and give feedbackPID
allen2 Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 1) The W2k3 R2 i connected has all the lastest patches.2) The XP rdp Client was taken from a XP CD from the support folder and its installer version number is 6.0.2526.3) There wasn't any update on the W98SE.4) The RDP client is 128bit and the OS languages are US.
