MFU list on Start Menu not working

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Fresh install of XP Home: On Boot Up, the Start Menu's MFU (Most Frequently Used) list ALWAYS shows the same list of default programs, even if I remove them and they are replaced with programs that I've opened and used. On Next boot, the "fresh install" MS programs are listed again!

The 5 "default" programs that show up on the list are:

MSN

Windows Media Player

Windows Messenger

Tour Windows XP

File & Settings Transfer Wizard

These 5 programs are the ones that are listed any time you do a fresh install, but normally, they get replaced as you use the PC and open other programs.

I've tried "Clearing" the list; manually deleting them one at a time; using enough programs to replace them all; changing the number of programs that can be displayed, etc, but on the next reboot (or Log Off & On) they alays come back!

How can I correct this situation?

Thank you.

Found Solution!

For XP:

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/21/1/Start-Menu-pops-up-at-every-logon-and-the-Most-Frequently-Used-programs-list-is-reset-everytime.html

For Vista:

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/163/1/Frequently-Used-Programs-list-is-reset-to-defaults-during-every-logon-in-Windows-Vista.html

I should add that although the article's title indicates that the Start Menu pops up at logon AND the MFU list is reset to defaults, in my case only the MFU list was being reset. However, the solution worked perfectly for me.
