struggling with getting MDAC going - I'm just trying out database

I am trying to get into dynamic web development and I have had a nightmare of a time just getting the development environment up and running. First problems installing Visual Studio and now, having given up on that I thought I would just try to go without it - and work through Dreamweaver. I cannot, though, see MDAC under the list of OBDC drivers, though apparently i need this and have installed successfully a number of times....what's going on? I don't even know where to begin picking this one...
