Alps pointing device has stopped working

Laptop = Sony Vaio VGN-FZ140E

O/S = XP Pro SP3 (32-bit)

I was about to make a final image of my laptop before doing a fresh installation but the Alps pointing device has stopped working all of a sudden. It was working just fine and the only thing that did was remove all crap from my laptop using a freeware uninstaller called Revo.

The attached image shows what I get in the device manager. When I remove the HID compliant mouse ting (hoping that at the next reboot it will automatically detect my Alps pointing device), the laptop starts, the mouse works but the keyboard does not. I am totally clueless and just want to get out of this misery and sheer agony that I am stuck with for the past 2/3 days.
