Cannot download anything from internet

Guys & Gals, newbie here, so first and foremost, hello!

right i have a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium

approximately about 2 weeks ago i think i had a virus and after googling a few things, i think i had the "conficker virus"

the symptoms i had was i couldnt open my AVG to run a scan, it wouldnt even allow me to do it in safe mode

anyway, my laptop would not allow me to download anything from the internet, if i click on run, the progress bar goes along but nothing runs and completes, if i click save the progress bar goes along and completes but it does not appear in the desired location.

i have downloaded from a friends PC Avast, Super antispyware & malware & anti malware - i have installed these from a usb stck in safe mode onto my laptop. i have ran these and it did find a fair bit of nasty stuff and removed it

but i still cannot download anything!

maybe i have some setting wrong on the laptop somewhere which prevents me from downloading

please help if you can
