$MFT Defrag of Boot Partition

Greetings.

I am hoping sooner or later to find a way to defrag the $MFT on XP boot partitions. See-

Copying all files off the partition, reformatting & copying back can "defrag" the $MFT;

but then, of course, there is a boot problem.

Anyone know how or have ideas about how to resolve the resulting boot problem?

Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
