Summation in Excel

Hey guys,

I found this wesite forum very useful in the last little while so I ended up signing up for the forum. I have a question that have been driving me nuts in the last week or so. I cannot figure it out at all. Basically I need to do a summation in excel (ie. sigma). Here is my problem. My formula is sigma(X-10). What I need is a formula that allows me to take values form a list of values and keep adding them into X and sum them at the end. Also while I am summing I want all negative numbers from my list of values excluded form my summation. Is there anyway that excel can compute this without having to do it all manually cell by cell. Iother words compute everthing in one excel and give me my final answer.

Thanks!!

Brent

Your explanation is vague at best. You could help with an example.

However, let me just say Excel cannot do summations in the sense you speak of sigma(x-10). You need to come up with a formula that will give you the nth sum for sigma(x-10). So, for you example of sigma(x-10), the series would be

sum of 1 = (1 - 10) = -9

sum of 2 = (1 - 10) + (2 - 10) = -17

sum of 3 = (1 - 10) + (2 - 10) + (3 - 10) = -24

sum of 4 = ....

sum of n = (n)(n+1)/2 - 10n

Again, if this is not what you're looking for, you need to be more specific.
