As this is a USB device, have you made sure other USB items work in the same slot?

Most printers require you to install the software and then plug in the Printer after it tells you to, not the other way around.

What happens if you uninstall all the HP software and then plug the printer in and just let Vista find it and install its own software from the web?

oh thanks for your help

usbs are fine all working

ive tried to do a test page again and have it just queuing with some refreshing showing

have to go out but ill unistall and try what youve suggested later today as this seems to be a long process

maybe ill look into buying a printer that is compatiable with vista and works 1st time!!!!

Firstly, queuing maybe that you have a bunch of other tried and failed print jobs stuck there, so before you try anything else, try to empty the queue. Not sure with HP, but usually right click the printer tray icon and open the Printer control panel and select to DELETE all pending print jobs. Close that down and try another SINGLE print job. If that doesn't work, delete it again from the Queue.

Then use 'Programs and Features' to uninstall your printer. Reboot, with the printer plugged in and on and see if Vista finds it and installs generic drivers.

Your printer is listed as Vista compatible on the HP web site, so I wouldn't go grabbing another just yet!

Good Luck
