WSUS SQL backend w/o AD

So here is my issue, I would like to set up a new server with WSUS 3 that uses a SQL backend. From all the documentation that I read it seems like the requirement is in place that I need the SQL server in an AD domain. Has anyone done it without AD and if so how.
