Vista networking seems to be broken

Hi folks,

I hope someone can help me out here. I recently did a fresh install of Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I've previously used 64-bit with no problems except my firewire soundcard wasn't supported. Thus the move to 32-bit.

The problem is this: I can surf the Internet fine but I can't browse the Windows network and the notification icon for networking shows a red cross (see below).

Also, if I try and rectify the problem by clicking on this or the 'Network' icon on the desktop (see below), things just seem to hang.

In a possibly related matter, when shutting down, the process also seems to hang and I need to do a hard restart or shutdown.

These are quite frustrating problems and I don't even know where to begin looking for answers. Hopefully somebody has the key.

Also, as you can see, I can browse the network in the following 'manual' way, i.e. to type in an address (in this case //192.168.1.33) of one of the computers on the network:
