urik Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I am trying to install 64 bit drivers for xp64, specifically, for 3100CN (dell lazer). Reply is "print spooler" not active, or RPC not active. Activited, but won't stay activiated, so error message. Can't install 64 bit printer drivers. Any ideas.
cluberti Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Is this the driver installer you are using?
urik Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 I've tried both R116800 and R166999. The error message every time is RPC server is unavailable. However, I checked and it is running (services; remote procedure call). When I go to Print Spooler, it shows off, and when I start it, it always turns off when I try to install the driver.

Are there any events in the System or Application event logs showing why the spooler service fails to stay running?
urik Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 nothing. there doesn't appear to be any reference to the issue in either the system log or application log. I did a search about the issue, and did come up with a spool dll on MS web site showing an older number. I am thinking I maybe should install the older dll file and see what happens.
cluberti Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 See, now you're assuming the version of the spooler is at issue, when we have no data backing this up, and installing older versions usually isn't possible without hackery (which I'd suggest you avoid). It might be best to start the spooler, and then gather a crash dump of spoolsv.exe when trying to install the driver to see what is actually happening.
