Reinstall Windows standard drivers after nlite removal

Recommended Posts

Hi,

my notebook runs under Windows XP installed from an nlite CD.

I bought a new Digicam which needs the standard Windows PTP driver to run and thats the Problem: I not included these into my nlite CD. But my windows runs for one year and I didn`t want to reinstall it.

Have you any idea How to include the drivers in my running Windows XP?

An update/repair does work, because my CD is SP2 and I installed SP3.

I already tested to just overwrite the windows drivers.cab with the original one, but it didn't work.

Any Ideas?

Would be great to get my Digi Cam worked.

You have to copy the driver from the original Install Disk to your current Windows.

But It isn`t as easy as it sounds.

First you have to unpack all *.inf.

Copy all *.IN_ Files of the I386 of your Windows CD to your harddisk and unzip it using 7zip

7z e *.IN_

This will also extract *.ini Files and some *.inf Files which belongs to other parts of windows and arn`t driver.

Delete this Files, which arn`t dirvers!

Now copy all left Files to <YOUR WINDIR>\inf\ but don`t overwrite a file!

After this you have to update thedrvindex.inf File in your Windows Folder with the original CD ones.

But be carefull, SP3 changes the File, don`t manipulate this Settings, which pointing to sp3.cab!

Last but not least you have to replace the driver.cab (Driver Cache\i386) with the original one and unpack it to system32\drivers.

That`s it!

This is just a fast Workaround. Make Backups of Files you overwrite! After this, all original Windows XP drivers are "installed" again.

No I am sure, that they named correct, when unpacked.

I think they just named as .XX_ to difference it from to unpacked form. But they packed with the real name.
