Hi.

I'm just seeking a bit of advice with regards to using a Windows XP 2003 Remote Desktop Connection.

This is actually a pretty bad situation and I'm ashamed of myself but here goes, I need to give a brief background first:

On Monday past (18th) at 4pm I used a RDC to log in as one of my colleagues from my workstation, in order to search for an e-mail in his Outlook (the e-mail had originally been CCed to me but I'd deleted it). Anyway, I had accidently opened an e-mail from his wife, which was tracked. This guy spends the day on the road so he's never in the office after 8:15am so he was naturally pretty livid that someone was snooping around his e-mail. He reported it to our boss and an IT administrator first thing Wednesday morning(20th).

Later the same day I met him on a work issue and admitted to him that I had accessed his PC remotely and explained my reasons. I was lucky, he took it OK - we shook hands over it - he informed my boss that he didn't want any further action taken, and I also explained the situation to my boss personally.

Since then the IT engineer has run a maintenance scan on Outlook on Thursday and informed all internal staff by e-mail on Friday to change their passwords (there is a culture in our work of people keeping 'welcome' as a password), report any suspicious activity etc.

BUT...... here's the thing:

I haven't just done this on one occassion, I've been doing it for three years, using other user IDs, using remote desktop connections all from my workstation. I am beginning to panic a little, and I'm wondering if my activity can be tracked and that ultimately I will be fired?

I know I deserve it and that I'm an a**hole for doing this but I had no malicious intent. Mainly I used the administrator log in to install stuff on my PC, like Firefox etc, and used an IT staff log to access filtered internet sites. Those passwords were changed a few months ago, so IT must have caught on that something was up but nobody ever said anything to me.

I don't know if this latest episode will trap me once and for all, or if it will blow over because no action was taken against me on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday?

Any thoughts?
