Microsoft Word

I get an occasional unexpected 'MS Word has to close' phenomenon leading to a 'Read Only' message on re initialisating the application (because 'the file is already being used by another user' - ie. me!).

Can I get out of this without rebooting, or must I inevitably reboot, and content myself with sending an arsenic impregnated letter to the high eschelons of MicroSoft?

Have you tried Log Off & Logon again? Quicker than a reboot.
