I'm hoping I can find some guidance for an issue I'm having installing WSUS 3.0 on a new server. The server is acting as a domain controller for a small office. This is the first time I've used or attempted to use WSUS.

My operating system is Windows Server 2003 w/SP2, 32-bit edition. I have IIS installed, MMC 3.0, and .Net framework 2.0. The server has been completely configured and the domain is up and running when I tried to do the WSUS install.

The install appears to go fine and installs, and once it gets to the point where it does the initial synchronization it locks up and I can't do anything. I end up having to do a cold shutdown, and when I bring the machine back up it will log on but then immediately freezes up. I ended up having to reboot in safe mode and stop the "update services" service from starting automatically. After doing this I can then log on.

I uninstalled WSUS 3.0 and tried again with the same results. I can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas?

More info...

I downloaded WSUS 3.0 from Microsoft's website and used the following file:

WSUS3Setupx86.exe

For config options I put in that WSUS should store the updates locally on the server, create it's own new database, manual synchronization, and no proxy server.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Not too sure if this will help or not but have you installed the latest version of BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer) i dont think setup allows you to go past unless you have it installed - i had a similar issue and updating it helped resolve it but i did this before SP2 for WS2003 so not sure if its already included.

Did you turn off any AV programs? what does the eventvwr say? the initial sync can take a while (although not too long f you have broadband) - how long are you leaving it for?

Heres a SBS guide for you to look at http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/yanivf/...ep-by-step.aspx
