MichaelZ Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hi every one,I have a problem installing the release candidates of SP1 on Vista Ultimate. The system is a Dell notebook installed from the accompanying DVD. After installation there was never a question concerning registration.I tried to install RC SP1 RC build 17036 and 17042. Because of no success I always restored a disk image of the system state prior to the SP1 update. The installation always runs ok and wants to reboot. At shutdown there are three update installation phases and the system reboots. Then there are again three update phases where the third almost or completely finishes but then the text appears on the same screen that update failed and the system will be restored.I tried build 17128 and was hoping that it will work because according to the release notes installation problems were fixed. Has anyone an idea if log files of the update with an error description survive the uninstall and if yes where they can be found? Many greetingsMichaelZ
MagicAndre1981 Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hello, go to "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and look for an error inside the CBS.log or look for the error inside the WindowsUpdate.log.If you found one, post the code here.
MichaelZ Posted January 19, 2008 Author Posted January 19, 2008 The problem is solved and SP1 RC build 17128 is running OK.I had a look at the CBS.log but that was not quite easy to analyse. Incidentally I found a post in a Microsoft TechNet Blog stating that DELL system software and anti virus software solved the installation problem. So I uninstalled McAfee Security Center (not only deactivated the components as before) and I uninstalled DELL Quick Set. Now the SP1 RC could be installed. I have no idea if one or both were causing the trouble, but I don't have the delight to take the time and analyze that in detail ;-)I never imagined that Microsoft really means what they say: no anti virus and firewall software. IIRC I never had to uninstall such stuff installing XP SP1 or SP2. Probably the most common products should be handled by the update correctly, but I can't imagine that this can be done in the remaining weeks until release. Many GreetingsMichaelZ
