Anyone using the terminal server patch for remote desktop connections?

The patch I just used seemed to make quite a mess on my bro's pc. I had to do a system restore to get things properly running again. Wondering if there is a more up to date patch? Also from a reliable download site. Unless there is another way (without installing a third party app) to connect to my brother's machine without him having to use Remote Assistance
