Backup drive missing!

We have a IBM Gen 5 backup drive. I recently installed a hardware update from Windows update. When the server restarted the backup device lights are constantly flashing so i thought the hardware update must have failed and went into device manager starngely the backup device is not even listed there - kind of lost here as to what i could try next?? any ideas? i will be going into safe mode few hours later but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

If in the Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, you have an item called "USB Mass Storage Device". Turn off or unplug your hard drive "safely" then right click on "USB Mass Storage Device" and click uninstall. When its finished turn on or reconnect your external hard drive and it should reinstall itself properly again.
