Prevent BSOD automatic restart using recovery console or other method

I performed an upgrade from xp to vista and now my laptop will not start at all, not even in safe mode. I keeping getting the blue screen of death every time. However, because I can not stop it from rebooting, I have no idea what error it is even giving me. How do I stop the computer from rebooting without getting into vista?

I have a compaq v6000.

You'd have to boot with an ERD CD like BartPE or WinPE (or the Vista disc itself) and do a repair install, or reinstall, of Vista or XP.
