How can I limit network access

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've got 3 computers that need different types of access to my network:

- computer 1(OFFICE DESKTOP) is cable connected to my router and to my printer

- computer 2(OFFICE NOTEBOOK) is connected through a wireless card

- computer 3(KIDS DESKTOP) is connected through a wireless card

I would like to be able to share the printer with all of my computers, but would like to limit the Shared files (used for my work) to the OFFICE DESKTOP and to the OFFICE NOTEBOOK.

I have created a network that shares the printer , but I don't know how to deny the File sharing access to the KIDS DESKTOP.

Is it possible to control this type of access and can anyone guide me through this ???

Thanks

If your router supports VLANs, you can limit communication between ports. Segmenting your network, if you like. It may be better than a software solution depending on whether you want to limit all communication or not.

Can you tell us what these computers are running? I assume they're all on XP of some sort, but it would help to know if they're on XP Pro, Home or Media Center. Thanks.

Sorry !

They're all running on XP Home Edition and the router that I'm using is LINKSYS WRV54G Wireless-G 2.4GHz

How can I find out if it supports VLANs ??? ...My Router is a LINKSYS WRV54G Wireless-G 2.4 GHz

In this case, I do want to limit all communications ... but it may be useful to know how to limit only certain files or folders.

How would I go about this ?
