Sony DVE 3 & MS Word Problem, Shift key capitalisation causes unus

We have Sony Digital Voice Editor 3 software loaded on a PC running MS Word 2000 9.0.3821 SR-1 over Win XP Home Edition V5.1 SP2.

The DVE software came with a Sony ICD-BM1DR9 Digital Voice Recorder.

We record dictation on the DVR, then trsfr the file to the DVE and open up MS Word.

We listen to the recording via a footpedal controlling the DVE and type into MS Word at the same time.

We find on a random basis that progressing the Sony Digital 'tape' with the foot pedal and concurrently hitting the Shift key to capitalise a letter in Word can cause a drop down menu to appear or some other unwanted event to occur as well as the capitalisation.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this & how to fix it??
