How do I make a "streamlined" CD/DVD for XP

Hi,

I recently bought a SONY VAIO FZ104E Laptop which has a SATA harddisk. The Laptop came with Vista..When I tried to boot the Laptop using my original XP disk (which I purchase more than a year back), everything appeared to go fine until I got a screen saying that no internal harddisk found...I had to pay a bit and a "support guy" somehow got XP installed... I have yet to check if all drivers are working or not.

In the meanwhile, I googled and found out that the CD I had did not have the drivers for a SATA harddisk. Then I read about the "streamline" concept and would like to make a bootable CD/DVD/"streamlined CD/DVD" which will have:

1) XP SP2

2) All the patches that have been released since Xp's SP2 (which I am in the process of downloading using AutoPatcher), and

3) All the drivers that that I have downloaded for my Laptop from Sony's web site.

How do I go from here in order to make the "streamlined" DVD  Do I simply copy all the download patches and the drivers to some folder or  ????? Somewhere I read about nLite or something but could not really figure out and am ending my writing this post/request.

Will be very much thankful for your help.

nLite is exactly what you need.

when you use nlite to do your SATA drivers MAKE SURE you have a set of drivers that include a .cat file and a txtsetup.oem file....

nLite is pretty easy to understand.

as for updates you should go here --> http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ and get ryans update pack and then here http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4955 and get the followup pack to that with those 2 packs you will have a current "Fixed" sp2 disk.

in the nlite sub-forum you will find a slipstreamer rfor Windows media player 11 and nlite will integrate IE7 smoothly also.

so you need all of your EXTRACTED drivers not the standard old installation packages... Try this --> http://siginetsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34 it will grab MOST (sometimes it misses a litlle so double check) of the extra drivers installed on your system.

Also grab A trial copy of vmware or a free copy of virtualPC (Use google) Testing is a must if you are gonna get into this:P

Sorry for the rambling post is 6 am here.

#1 Copy XP Source and slipstream sp2 into it with nlite also have nlite make and burn a cd for you to have a solid XP w\sp2 source.

#2 Use the WMP11 slipstreamer and add WMP11 into your source

#3 Get all of your drivers together each in its own little seperate folder (Drivergrabber does most of this step)

#4 rerun nlite choose hotfixes and drivers and iso page.

#6 select these files for proper updating:

RVMUpdatePack2.1.11.7z

RUPUpdates-2.1.11.8-Addon.7z

IE7-KB928090-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe

IE7-KB929969-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe

IE7-WindowsXP-KB933566-x86-ENU.exe

IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe <-- this is the actual IE7 installer the other 3 are hotfixes you can find by googling their kb****** numbers.

add all drivers and remember to select the multiple driver folder, then find your base folder that has you previously gotten drivers, select all is the next choice to pick now if you did your SATA drivers properly you'll get a little pop-up asking which way you want to integrate them choose txtmode.

#7 mix

#8 make iso and test. if all goes well burn and install as needed.

now there are many many many more steps you can do and it gets pretty addictive :P But this is the pretty basic.

Also if you want more help I am on messenger at kelsenellenelvian@hotmail.com

P.S. its "Slipstream" and "Integrate"

P.S.S. How much did you pay? Just curious.

Thanks for the reply Kelsenellenelvian,

Also. thank you for clearing my concepts and use of terminology ;)

It looks like a demanding task.... Well let's see..

Are you asking how much I pais for teh Laptop or to that "support" guy?

Laptop = USD $ 1,500, "Support Guy" = USD $ 150

Hi all, Hi Kelsenellenelvian,

To be honest I am so frustrated that I do not mind the $150. I was told that I will be able to run XP without any problems/driver problems but now I can not find XP compatible drivers fo majority of the the devices. Almost all the drivers that I downloaded from SONY's site gives a message that "This *&^(@ can only be installed with Vista".... I really have no idea what to do now. Without any exaggaration, I have been saving for the last 1 year and now I am stuck with something that looks nice but only 50% of which works.

Can anyone help me somehow find the drivers for SONY VAIO VGN-FZ140E and which will run on XP?

Trust me, I will be eternally grateful.

Regards.

Hey Morland,

Its not that scarey a task once you get used to it. I felt the same way earlier check out http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ and try http://driverpacks.net/ for drivers the driver base is a GREAT way of installing and getting 90% of all drivers to work on your laptop. Sometimes integrated sound cards do not work but its the best I've seen yet. I hope you do not mind having a DVD install disk.

Thanks eyeball and ajcheema,

Thanks for the reply. I will try the URL .... however my first task is o somehow find the driver(s) which will allow me to boot with my original XP SP2 CD and be able to recoginze the SATA harddisk... just want to do a fresh installation of windows.. But I do not have a floppy drive??

Also what scares me is that the "tech support guy" has somehow placed the recovery backup for my original Vista and he told me that I can always go back to how things originally were by pressing F10 at the boot time.... I am just too scared to try going back and then not be able to install XP again ; and thus end up visiting the tech support guy again.... just too scared and very much frustrated :(

All the wonderful folks have shared a lot of useful information and links but I am so confused and frustrated right now is that I have no clue where to start from.... I installed Norton Ghost 9 and made a backup image but when I tried to boot with the Norton Ghost bootable CD the same thing...even norton ghost does not seem to find the internal SATA drive :(((((

Where do I start? I want to 1st take a backup so that taking the worst can, I can always revert backup to the original setting (with that "Vista thing")... Once I have this backup and can verify that I can always boot from some CD and will be able to restore the backed up file, I would then like to do a fresh installation of XP and then take it from there... I even trie Acronis but it's boot disk also did not find the SATA disk...

Not sure if anyone can understand my confusion and fustration :(
