I am using Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 with many updates applied. The hard disk being used is Seagate ST3120026AS with firmware version 8.05. A single NTFS partition exisits on the hard disk occupying entire capacity that may be occupied by a partition.

I have been occasionally been receiving strange files in my Local Settings\Temp directory that can be described by the following (file name, followed, by file size, followed by file attributes):

Drive 381C5E60 Clusters.dir

87,889,597 bytes

Archive and Compressed attributes set

Drive 381C5E60 Files.dir

9,035,555 bytes

Archive attribute set

Drive 381C5E60 Names.dir

3,199,312 bytes

Archive attribute set

Attached is S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic, recently taken, of the hard disk being used showing the hard disk in good condition.

I ran CHKDSK and it resulted in displaying "0 KB in bad sectors".

I usually simply delete the odd files and allow them to be regenerated in the future (at least a week).

What could be the reason for the existence of the files and are they a problem?
