default folder location for open/save dialog

Hello. I would like to know whether there is some configuration option or registry setting that affects the initial directory for the 'Open file' windows dialog.

I'm used to the XP version where there is a fast drop-down menu. On vista, there is no such thing, and I am forced to scroll down to where 'Computer' is, expand it and only then choose the drive where I want to go. It gets annoying when you have to do this every time you start an application that's dumb (doesn't store last-used directories).
