  1. superfetch has do with USB memory keys and adding those to your memory pool. the apps opening faster would be the better memory management of vista.

Don't confuse SuperFetch with ReadyBoost. Originally the technology that was used with USB keys was called SuperFetch, but later details showed that SuperFetch was simply the new prioritization scheme that Vista uses. If you use a usb key to speed up memory that uses information from SuperFetch, but the actual speed increase is due to ReadyBoost. Ok I hope that made sense, I'll try and get more information to clarify.

  2. Ok I noticed a new bug with Winamp. If you try to display video with it it reverts your theme to Aero basic until you close Winamp. If you reopen winamp and play music everything is fine, the error/problem only occurs when displaying video.

I also installed WinRAR and it works just fine. It even seems a bit faster at uncompressing files.

  3. ok I installed the driver for both cores in Vista Beta 2 under safe mode. Restarted and got a BSOD. Restarted again and same thing. Went back into safe mode, updated driver to original and all was good again, but still fairly slow. Any other suggestions?

  4. I have compiled a breif compatibility list for Software running in Vista Beta 2. Please add to it as you see fit and ignore any mistake as it was compilied in 10 minutes and late at night. Here is the list copied from Excel 2007.

    Program ------ Compatible ---------- Notes

uTorrent ----- Yes -------- Requires manual port forwarding/does not save itself as default app for .torrent

Nero 7 -------- No -------- Silently fails or fails if run as Admin

    Nero 6 --------Yes ------- Express doesn't work

Winamp ------ Yes ------ Taskbar preview presents odd behavior/extra taskbar items

Trillian ------- Yes ------- Settings/Buddy list not saved

    FlashFXP ------ Yes ------- None

Oblivion ------- Yes ------- Runs a bit slower, but overall well. BSOD after 5 min.

WMP11 -------- Yes ------- Search causes system slowdown/sound system crash

    Office 2007 ------- Yes ------- None

Limewire ------ Yes ------ Disables Aero Glass

XviD -------- Yes ------- Decodes as expected

    My system:

    Athlon 64 X2 4200+

2GB OCZ RAM running 1T command rate

    250GB Seagate 7200RPM drive w/8M cache

    PNY GeForce 6800GS w/256MB

  5. You can upgrade from Xp, but in my experience it is painfully slow to wait for the upgrade. After going through the upgrade on my laptop I found that it was faster with my second machine to do a fresh install and simply reinstall the programs I really needed. I also have a lot less compatibility problems that way. I would highly suggest against upgrading from XP. Vista is almost up to the task of being a primary OS, but you severly limit it if you upgrade from XP.

  6. SubNerve are you referring to Vista Beta 2 in your last post? I have experienced slowdown's as well with Beta 2 with a system with similar specs, I wonder if this same driver would work with the latest build.
