thats the message on the computer..... Does a memory card always have to be formatted? How can I do that?

Hi I just purchased my first digital camera (vivitar 5385) and downloaded the software that came with it (Ulead Explorer 8.0 and Ulead photo express). I tried connecting my camera with the usb cable to my computer and I'm getting the following message: Memory card file format is not recognized (does not conform to Exif-DCF standard). Does this sound familiar?? I don't know what to do next.... I have SD 256 MB memory card. Anyone??.......Thanks!!
