  1. After playing a bit with Windows 98 and IE 6, I've started to consider switching to Windows 2000. Why?... Because it copies and deletes files without any additional effects (like desktop freezing, explorer locking and other system resources related problems).

Then I started to think about how to make the Windows 98 better. The conclusion is the worst components of the Windows 98 system are the system shell (explorer.exe) and the Internet Explorer.

But, it is possible to replace the system shell with any application. Well,... it is possible to do it, all right. But, it would be good to retain the system shell functionality, in the same time.

Writing a completely new system shell is a bit complicated task. Is there any replacement available, already?

... Here's one of the simplest shells I'm aware of, LiteShell:

  2. ... Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question, but I'll try to help anyway, given the responses you've received thus far...

I'm currently backing up one of my PC (2 x 450 MHz PIII w/1 Gig) RAM and once I finish (only 300 more gigs to go...:no: ) I'll be installing 98SE one one HD, then W2K on another one.

Question: how much memory can 98SE actually use? I know that it requires no trickery to get it working with 1 Gig (unlike my other PC w/2 Gig) but will it actually use the last 512 meg of memory? Would it be better if I were to create a 256 - 512 meg ramdrive, and use it as a dedicated swap space?

    TIA

... He's not asking if 98 will work with more than 512MB of memory, he's asking if 98 can USE more than 512MB of memory. If 98 can't use it, he was thinking of just using the extra memory as a ram drive for the swap file... (personally, I'd check out this forum and see about putting 98 on that ram drive instead)

  3. Nice tip. I have a question though - Is there a way to create folders as menus rather than links. If you see what I mean. Add a folder to the menu so that when clicked on, instead of opening an explorer window, it has a black arrow beside it and loads a menu showing the contents of that folder?

... If you're willing to give up your Links folder in Internet Explorer, you can use it as a toolbar with cascading folders. I've replaced my Quicklaunch toolbar with it...

  4. So, I've recently stumbled upon this particular corner of the world, and some link in some post led me to some ideas on virtualplastic.net. I was interested in trying out the program eFX, but the link they have leads to the guy's resume, and there doesn't appear to be anything else at his site. Googling for downloads just leads to places linked to his site. Can anyone send a clue my way?
