I also get a weird cursor on my computer at home. it looks like a backwards 1. It doesn't cause a problem but it just isn't the normal cursor. I never tried looking into changing it.
In this case, it does create problems because it covers more than one position, so if you make a typing error it is difficult to know where the cursor is exactly.
That is why I am looking for a solution.

I am busy fixing an XP system for someone else. All has succeeded without too many problems except for the cursor in input fields.
This has become a large block covering more than one position and I cannot get it back to the normal thin line.
Obviously, I tried "start-config screen -mouse -pointers", but the input field cursor is not in that list.
Anybody?

I am ready to believe you, but before we even started I had a long chat with a Symantec technical expert and he/she assured me that Ghost 2003 does not support Vista and that Ghost 2008 (or whatever the last version is) would not ghost a dual-boot system.
Hence we bought Acronis TrueImage and the rest is history.

Anyway, I strongly suspect that Faronics Deepfreeze was the main cause of the problem.

My final mail on this:
After trying all combinations of cloning and restoring that we thought might help, we gave up on trying to do this the smart way and made our copies the tough way.
So, what we did successfully:
1. We created one master system with XP and its applications on C, Vista on D, and shared data on E
2. Using Acronis TrueImage 11 Home we made a copy of the XP-partition on a USB-disc
3. On the new systems (the clones) we restored the XP-partition; not the MBR or track 0
4. On the clones we used Partition Magic to create the partitions.
5. We installed Vista in Partition D
6. We installed the Vista applications in partition D
7. We copied the data to partition E
8. We finalized the settings and Faronics Deepfreeze
9. We used VistaBootPro to change the start-up prompts and default
10. Steps 3 thru 9 were repeated 9 times (for each of the clones)
In retrospect: TrueImage turned out to be good for XP; at least we only did everything once there. My feeling is that either TrueImage has some flaws with Vista and dual-boot and/or with the combination with Faronics Deepfreeze.
I have reported the problem to Acronis.
This was a one-time action, so my interest in solutions is academic from now on.

what happens if you remove a drive from a target machine put it into the machine that is complete and do a disk to disk image? Does it boot properly then?
Could be TrueImage Home 11 doesn't like Vista? Don't know I use either Norton Ghost or WIM's for all of my imaging.
We have avoided taking discs out so far, but it may be worth a try.
TrueImage 11 is advertised as supporting Vista, so it should work. I have also asked Acronis' support team for advise, but they are kind of slow to react.
We will try again tomorrow morning.

We are a small training center for elderly people. All of us are volunteers. Through a grant we just received 10 new (identical) systems and we decided to make them dual-boot. (XP/Vista). We installed everything, the OS, applications and data on one system, on 3 partitions (C=XP, D=Vista, E=Data). Next we wanted to clone this on all other systems.
Using Acronis TrueImage Home 11 we made a backup on an external disc and a bootable CD with the program.
After the restore on a new system, XP turned out to be running OK, but Vista does not.
When starting Vista we get the following error:
Title Bar: Rundll32.exe Entry Point Not Found
Message: The procedure entry point SdbGetAppCompatDataSize could not be located in the dynamic link library apphelp.dll.
This is soon followed by other errors and a "Your user profile was not loaded correctly"...
Also, we noticed that C and D drives get switched in a real funny way. This happens also in XP!
Googling we found a similar problem reported in Technology questions, but no responses.
We need to have all 10 systems running by the end of this week and the only solution now seems to re-install Vista (and all its applications) on all systems by hand, which seems so dumb....

I feel like a complete fool but I cannot get subchapter numbering right in Word 2007.
I have this large and complex document that I created with only 2 levels: level 1 had numbering from the beginning; level 2 was set up without numbering, but I now need to number the level 2's also.
But whatever I do, I cannot get the numbering for this new level right.
Please advise.
PS I know how to do it in Word 2003 so I saved the whole 70 pages as doc and read them in Word2003 which I still have on an older computer. This made a complete mess of all the embedded pictures (a little incompatibility, I guess) so that is no fallback either.

Thank you for your response. I passed it on to the user.
In the mean time, someone had told him to remove the file mxfilerelatedcache.mxC2 from all folders and according to the user, this solved the problem.
As mxfilerelatedcache.mxC2 is an innocent file used by Magix, I think that something that he did while deleting all these files may have reset his profile.
Let's see what happens in the future. Case closed, for now.

One of my customers has following problem: (Vista Home Premium + Office 2007):
* Word 2007 crashes about 6 seconds after start-up with the standard MS message: Program encountered problem and will be closed etc.
* When using Word with the 2nd user account on the same system, the problem does not occur.
* Apparently there has recently been a virus in this system that has been detected and removed by McAfee (not known which virus)
* Re-installation does not solve the problem
* Other programs in Office 2007 work OK
Any suggestions?

Not sure whether this is the right forum; please relocate if necessary
We have a setup of 10 systems for education purposes; non commercial. We do have a tool that will revert systems back to the original situation so that all havoc from our users disappear after reboot.
Currently these systems are maintained on an individual basis, but that is rather time consuming with all updates and such.
Now, within short, we are going to get 10 new systems which should all be dual-boot XP/Vista and the maintenance problem gets worse because we now have 20 "systems" to maintain.
What we are looking for is something like SMS or its successors from Microsoft but suitable and affordable for our situation.
Anybody, any suggestions and experiences?

All we want to be able to do is deploy programs and updates centrally to all systems.

I found the problem: it was the modem driver.
What happened was that after I completed the install, I noticed that the modem driver was missing (PCI simple comm controller).
I hooked up to driveragent.com which suggested the Creatix V.90 HaM for which I downloaded the driver; all went smooth. But, apparently, it is not the correct driver. I deinstalled and the shutdown problem went away.

Same thing: hard halt on shutdown, except it took a hell of a long time ...

take out the memory you added and see what happens. or run memtest or such memory tester on the system and see what you get.
Using Memtest86 3.2 Release (11/Nov/2004) I ran 6 passes without errors sofar and as the hard halt occurs at every shutdown, hibnernate or standby attempt it must be something else.

Further update:
I have been experimenting with other shutdowns: to restart, to hibernate, to stand-by.
It all gives the same effect: crash on "Windows shutting down" screen
Except for unclear reasons one time it came to a BSoD with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
I did not have time to read the stop code itself. tried to switch off the automatic re-start but the BSoD never came back ... just the full stop.

Further to my previous mail: I just read instructions on how to update a BIOS and I do not think that I am able to handle this procedure. Certainly not with someone else's PC.
Also, to be quite honest I do not believe that this would be the problem: before the fresh re-install of XP, the system stopped normally. No hardware was changed or added other than adding 256MB of memory.
The re-install was done to bring the system from ME to XP.

bios upgrade, check acpi settings in bios
Dear Iceman, this is somewhat beyond me.
I looked in the BIOS but could not find any ACPI-values: I disabled power management but that is not what you expected to hear.
And, I have never updated a BIOS: where do I find a good guide for a novice in this area?
By the way, the BIOS is ASUS Med 2001 Award BIOS

What's the bugcheck code of the crash, and did the box generate any *.dmp files on crash?
There is no blue screen or any message, hence no codes: the system just hangs (hard halt) with the shutdown message on the screen. The only wait out is to cut the power.
Restart then works fine, no messages or anything; the system runs great.
There are no *dmp files anywhere: I did a system search including hidden files etc..

Can you perhaps copy and paste all 3 types of events here, so we can review?
see attached word document (had to get it from the other system to my own)
when I looked at it again, I noticed that the errors come at startup while the crash occurs at shutdown, i.e. I have no further information about the shutdown crashes ...
as it is a clean install (I started with fdisk etc) and the system runs fine otherwise, I really do not understand it.
is there any other place where I could look for logging at shutdown time?

Take the Event ID numbers to www.eventid.net for further information to aid with troubleshooting.
I have submitted this event: it was not known.
Any suggestions in the mean time?

Sorry, I hit the wrong button (or more precisely I fell off my chair and hit some keys).
But my question is: have you tried installing support for chinese characters in windows? That should do it, I think. That install is more than just using the characters.

2clients use Linux
The WinXP client computers can't access certain files on the server which have special characters(chinese) in the name.
But the Linux client computers have no problem accessing files with special characters in them.
So how must I set the WinXP clients?

A weird problem:
I have done a fresh re-install of on a slightly older system (P3-900MHZ, 384MB): Windows XP-SP2 with all latest fixes; Office 2003-SP2 with fixes, Adobe 8.0, McAfee Security center.
System runs great BUT crashes (hard crash) during shutdown in the last screen ("Windows is "shutting down")
In the event log I find 2 acpi errors (event 4 & 5) and a service control system error event 7022.
Please advise.

Good thinking, but no, unfortunately. The owner tells me that he was playing around with all kinds of settings and then it happened ....
