thanks I decided to go the route of instlling xp pro in a new directory, and giving myself ownership of all the old files

I own two lisences for XP Pro SP2 that I got as a student at CMU for $15 each... I have never used either... When trying to work out some networking issues, I decided to upgrade my XP home box to pro... the upgrade went fine until the "setting up network" step, where the setup hung all night.... I tried restarting and it hung there again. I tried switching to the other disk, thinking "scratched?", but it hung in the exact same place. I tried unplugging my network and going again, but got no change. Any Ideas? if I can't get this upgrade to complete, is there a way to rescue "my documents" and my desktop before putting a new install over it? PLEASE HELP ME, I'M AT THE END OF MY ROPE!

firewall should have been adequately punched (what ports should be open?) IP address and subnet? ummm all three access the internet, and have unique IPs between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.99 and the subnet 255.255.255.0 file and printer sharing is most definately enabled, otherwise I wouldn't be able to check the "share this folder over the network" box. anything else?

My folks have a Desktop running XP Home (henceforth called HOME) I have a Laptop running Pro (henceforth called PRO1) I have a Desktop running Pro (henceforth called PRO2) all three computers are connected to a Lynksys switch, whose uplink is connected to a non-switching router. Each computer has a unique name and description and the MSHOME workgroup. Simple file sharing is enabled on all three machines. A guest account is enabled on all three machines. folders are shared on all three. HOME will not view workgroup computers, saying: ------------------------------------------------ Mshome is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available. ------------------------------------------------- PRO1 sometimes shows the list of workgroup computers, but double clicking any of them (except itself) yields a "network path not found" error PRO2 always shows all three computers, but gives the same "network path not found" error computer browser service in enabled on all three computers, and NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all three. DHCP is disabled on the router. WHY CAN'T I SEE MY SHARED FILES?? any help would be greatly appreciated.
