  1. I'm looking for a way to create a disk image for easy copying of workstation setups. I'd like to be able to burn a dvd and be able to boot from that and have it copy the disk image to the target system. I know there are a lot of ways to do this, but I'm looking for something that can be done by people who are not well educated about computers. They want to be able to just put the dvd in and click a button or two. Ideas?

Edit- this should probably be in Unattended windows. Sorry. :(

  2. I need to set up a domain for 4 different offices in 4 different locations. I've never had to do this before. How is it done?

There will be 4 domain controllers (unless there doesn't need to be, it's a low traffic network).

I have to do this tomorrow morning. Google isn't really helping. :(

    -edit:

I may not need one domain to cover 4 locations, I could just set up 4 smaller domains, and give the people that need it remote desktop to the domain controllers for file access, etc.

I wonder how well active directory would work over hamachi? <-- dumb question

  3. No, they used to have drivers for that hardware, but pulled them when vista came out. Also driver magic gives "device not in database" or whatever. I wonder if HP changed the internal id for the devices' chipset just so xp drivers wouldn't work? </conspiracy>

  4. I am very sorry but Vista drivers just plain won't work on XP....
Well I have to say I saw that coming. For some reason HP shipped the machine without a restore disk of any kind either.

Edit- I'm having him try Driver Magic.

  5. I am trying to help someone over IRC install XP to get his laptop to run better. After he formatted and installed XP, it seems that HP doesn't have the drivers he needs. Is there any way to get vista drivers to work on this laptop?

  6. Hey, I havent been around for a bit. (sorry about that. :P) But ive got a problem with my new[-ish] acer laptop.

Ill be working normally, have a few apps open (Opera, irssi, winamp, trillian) and be working normally. Then, my hard disk will start working non-stop and everything but the active application will freeze for a few mins. Whats going on here? Its really annoying. Im hoping there is some option other then reinstalling windows...

edit: to expand on that, Ive defraged (although it didnt seem to defrag very much), did badware scans, run ccleaner, etc.

Another edit: it hasnt always been like this.

Edit, again. problem fixed. the drive was in PIO mode due to a powerfailure.

  7. Since that error code usually means "Access Denied", I'd run filemon / regmon on that machine while attempting to install iTunes (or register the vbscript host) - you should see where the access denied messages are coming from, and be able to resolve it by rectifying the permissions.

thank you, ill try that tomarrow when i go back over there.

  8. posting this from my friends PC...

I recently got her an ipod. iTunes fails to install. after looking around a bit ive narrowed the problem down to visual basic scripting host.

ive tried reinstalling the windows scripting host, ive tried manually registering vbscript.dll, ive tried unregistering it, etc...

    regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll

    returns :

    DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\system32\vbscript.dll failed.
    Return code was 0x80004005

it did the same thing in safe and normal mode.

not sure if this matters, but the vbscript.dll is version 5.6.0.8825

  9. I have a computer running windows server 2003. i woke up this morning and found it off, i turned it back on and was greeted with a dialog asking why it shutdown unexpectedly. i thought nothing of it. power spike or something.

then i went for a walk, came back an hour later and found it off again.

im thinking its a hardware problem, but is there any software issues that may cause this?

  10. https://mozy.com/support/faq

"We do not support Windows 2003 or 64 bit architectures at this time."

Looks like they deliberately don't want you to run their software on Windows Server 2003. There might be a very good reason for it. Also - bear in mind that depending on an unsupported backup 'solution' is just crazy.

Perhaps you could run filemon and regmon to see what the software is using to determine which version of Windows it is running on?

I actaully did use it on windows 2003 for a few weeks, and then they made an update that caused it to require xp only. the version they are developing for windows 2003 requires payment.
