  5. G'day and Merry Xmas to all, OK, I know I'll probably get flamed bad for this one but hey, I gotta find out so I gotta ask... Say I go to C: and pick a file 'out of the blue', click on it and the "Open With" window opens with a list of programs which are used to open files of all sorts presented, typically none of these programs will open the file so what do I do? Also, how do I know (for future reference) which program to allocate for certain file types and extensions and is there a program out there that will do this for me? This problem has had me stumped from the first time I ever went near a computer and I am at the point now where I need to know.... I am not so 'thin skinned' that any negative comments u choose to reply with are going to do anything other than humour me, however, if u would consider posting something helpful it would be very much appreciated... Thankyou, slu77er.
  6. Merry Xmas to all, I am running WIN98SE on one of my comps and am having a hard time beating an error that appears on startup. I have a MicroStar mobo (MS-6309) with VIA Chips VT82C694X & VT82C686A. Intel Celeron 667MHz proc, 256 MB RAM with Amibios V3.2... On startup I receive this... "I/O read error" with an 'OK' box to click and nothing more! Click the 'OK' and it goes away but then what? I don't not know where this error is coming from nor how to solve it and I have surfed everywhere - I have registered with 2 forums other than this one - trying to find the answer to this most annoying problem. I wish to upgrade my bios and ordered the flash from the manufacturer which arrived promptly with a 10 day limit on its use ( 3rd day today ) and it will not load... When trying to flash the bios, while extracting the ZIP files I note that there is an error writing to file at or about 30% of the way through the process, all goes well then until trying to boot from the flash disk where I receive this:- DOS4G error (2001) : exception ODh (general protection fault) at 1AO:0026F660 TsF32 : prev_tsf32 81CB Crash address (unrelocated) = 1:0001C660 Any ideas, clues, hints or curse words that I haven't used would be very much appreciated, as I have mentioned previously, the 'clock is ticking' and I really don't want to have to send this 'flash' back for a refund... Thankyou to anyone posting any response slu77er
  7. Hey ssmokee, It's funny how the smallest clues solve the 'biggest' problems huh. Whilst reading your reply to this post I detected a certain tone in your voice which got me to thinkin that maybe I hadn't checked everything I should have and sure enough, I solved the prob in a matter of minutes when I went about it in the right way...talk about a steep learning curve! I guess thats what forums are all about eh. Thanks for questioning my question and have a merry Xmas... slu77er
  8. Thankyou Amitpagarwal, After reading thru the page u offered my problem was solved in a matter of moments! Merry Xmas to U and again Thankyou very much!! slu77er
  9. G'day all, After searching the countless pages referring to the 'black screen' found on WMP10, I am surprised to find that my particular problem doesn't seem to have been addressed anywhere... I am running XP home edition and WMP10 seems to work fine in all areas BUT for some reason it wont show visual of my WIN98SE back up disk which of course has 'Flight Simulator' on it. I hear the sound coming through loud and clear and all the other 'bells and whistles' seem to work as they are supposed to. It plays cd's and streams media and does anything else I ask of it so... Why has it decided not to read this disc visually? Can someone tell me what I did wrong? * The first time I played the WIN98SE disc it worked fine with visual and audio as it should be but I think I may have clicked something I shouldn't have that has caused this problem... ** I have also tested the disc to see whether I somehow 'wiped' it but it works fine on the other PC I keep here for just this reason. *** If I simply place the disk in the drive without opening WMP first, the 'splash' screen appears but if I try to clik on any of the icons I get an annoying lil' message "Please reinsert your Win98 CD ROM"... LORD GIVE ME STRENGTH!!
  10. G'day all, I hope one of the gurus here can help me with this cos it really has me stumped! In device manager the only device left to have a yellow mark on it after a lot of kicking, screaming and such is...(ACPI) BIOS. In 'properties' for this device is the device status message "windows could not load the driver for this device because the computer is reporting two ACPI.SYS bus types. (Code 2)"- contact your computer manufacturer to get an updated BIOS... OK, I've done that and have everything I need now to run the show as I want to -including the original CD for win98SE- on which after many 'dead ends' I finally found the 'acpi.sys' file under Base5.CAB..Hooray! Just a few more lil' baby steps and I have what I want and now I find myself 'hobbled' cos I cant get the damned thing open... Can somebody...anybody...tell me how to open this particular 'sys' file ?? As U can probably tell by now I am not an expert but damnit!! I didn't think I was that easy to beat either! I have the file sitting right there on the desktop and its taunting me and that hurts more than the process of finding the bl@@dy thing did!! Please save me from this nasty lil' item and let me find peace once more!
  11. Yes, I'm a n00bie in this virtual town but I'm here to tell U that I've been around and I hope that U will all rest assured that none of my posts will be leaving U bored. Yes I'm a poet amongst other things and I'd like to fly but I have no wings so I'll just have to wait until I get to Heaven and until then I rely on my lucky number 7!
