[Unattended CD fine - Now for RIS?]

Thanks Andy, copied the offending .dlls i was needing and have got it to work from a flat RIS image, plus other directories, and editing the .sif created by Setup Manager

Was hoping for an explanation on directory structure, and the further guides illustrate this great, if not over my needs, but its all good.

Hi all,

Having followed Alanoll's great guide and the comments of others, I have an unattended CD of XP with Drivers,hotfixes and Office as well, and I am chuffed with it

My problem is with trying to distribute this with RIS. Do you guys use risetup.exe and Setup Manager to create the .sif file, and then add/edit your required switches?

RIS setup Manager only copies the I386 folder, so I assume you copy over other directories $oem$ etc.

Also the .sif files that are created for the CD guide don't hold some of the parameters required for RIS so I can only assume that you edit the one created in Setup Manager or don't use it at all.

Can anyone advise/direct me to how to actually setup the directories for RIS to work from just having a successful CD ?

My actual error message on the client installing is 'setup cannot copy the file xpsp3res.dll'

For RIS the $oem$ sits alongside the i386, for unattend it is inside it. I dont require an $oem$ at this time, but placed unattend.txt inside i386 folder. So if that is wrong, I don't know..it still prompts for deleting existing installation

I think I may need a switch for the unattend.txt myself but don't know what it is

Can someone please explain to me why Unattended Setups and RIS are working differently for me?

I have some machines I want to be able to install to. They have single partitions with existing Windows installs. If i set up a RIS server to install from it will work fine, no prompting

However, if i set up an Unattend.txt and a network share and try to install the clients from there, I am prompted to delete their existing Windows installations, and then this doesn't work. They have no other partitions so I guess AutoPartition=1 can't work. I am not able to delete their existing partitions so installation can't continue

If use the same unattend file as a winnt.sif with the CD, then this works and existing installations are deleted etc., so i am baffled

[Help with updating installation point with office2003 service pack2]

Hi all,

i have deployed Office2003 to some computers through software installation in windows. I have now to upgrade this installation point with service pack2

I understand not the procedure; it seems to be a difficult process - slipstreaming!

I have the service pack2 .exe file, now please some help

My installation point is \\server99\folder\pro.msi

1)I have read to connect to admin share - how? is this start>run>\\server99\folder\msi Then do i issue this command - msiexec /p \\server99 etc etc

2)Or is the whole command run like start>run>\\server99\folder\.msi msiexec /p \\server99\folder\pro.msi etc etc

3)The command asks for the location of the .msp update files also. These are in the ServicePack2.exe. Clicking on this does not extract them, just installs the whole update!!

Please does anyone know of a clearly explained tutourial, or where is that Office Updater utility... Not available

dahvaio, i don't have this problem with the WINNT.SIF, still hoping to find out why this works and my unattended installation doesn't (see first post)

Your winnt.sif should work, move Convertfilesystem and Repartition to the [unattended] section of your answer file, as per my first post

I am not yet up to speed on advanced unattended setups using 3rd party that seem to work so well as illustrated on the boards.

I am perplexed as to why my unattend.txt works differently in certain situations.

If i name it winnt.sif and run with local cd then it does what i need i.e. automatically repartition my single C:\ and continue installing.

But if i want to run unattended setup it will not run without asking me to choose a partition for installation

So, i use setup manager to create a remote installation share. I put my unattend in the i386 directory that this creates. When i run an install over the network, my clients stop at the point where i have to choose what partition to install on. I get the blue screen showing existing partitions, which they have. Not even allowed to delete these partitions, as the setup files have already been copied on to them. THIS IS THE PROBLEM

My clients are all single drive machines with existing installations. I thought the repartition - convertfilesystem switches would do the trick

Hi all, i scoured the threads quickly and couldn't find one related to this, so a general question please. I use Setup Manager in Windows and the wizards to create either unattend files or RIS answer files, and then modify them later if i need to

Why is there no option when creating a RIS answer file to join a domain, as there is with an unattend? Does anyone know how to modify a remboot.sif to enable a computer to join a domain?

Yes Mike, didn't really make that clear. i map a drive on the client to the an i386 directory across the network. This directory contains MY unattend.txt, and this works without intervention if used as a winnt.sif on a floppy, but not as an unattend across a network. I am asked to delete existing windows installation folders on the clients

My partitioning needs are nothing fancy, just that the install runs silently!

My Unattend file is ok, and install runs completely unattended if i use the winnt.sif and the cd

However, if i set the install to run over the network, i will get asked to delete an existing installation folder on my clients. So my question is, why does this install run when i have the CD, but not over the network?

Is there a parameter for the unattend that will delete any existing folders?

Thanks but that doesn't work for me, i am still being asked on the client to pick the partition on which to install. I would like this unattend to run without being asked which partition to install on. The client has an existing installation of the same operating system. All unattend files are in the \1386 directory and the client has a mapped drive to this \i386. Again, any advice please?
