The topic and topic description pretty well cover the question. An earlier post describes the specific cause for considering reinstalling, but I'd like to know about dealing with other causes where reinstalling seems indicated.

I have some chapters where I've selected for an index and the markings show {X} etc. I have been unable to remove these with either the show/hide button or control+shift+8(keyboard 8). In addition, when I tried to create the index, nothing happened but an additional note. I wonder if Word 2002 has been damaged somehow and must be reinstalled? I had problems using Word for a 500 page book. For example, it would unpredictably introduce large amounts of white space. So I'm transferring Word files to Adobe PageMaker. There, the selections were used to make an index, with no problem. Thanks for any assistance. I have trouble knowing when to look for answers. If you provide one, could you let me know of it at minardjim@aol.com? Oh! I just noticed "enable email notification of replys." How convenient. I don't know how that works, but it seems the right sort of thing.
