I don't recommend that. I tried it a few months ago and was not impressed. It is basically experimental software for people who like to tinker. It's not usable as a normal desktop OS. But if you want to create some sort of very minimal bootable CD then you might give a try. Phil Hey Phil --- Hang onto your a$$. Mindows is about to become very useable. For the lover of bells and whistles? I don't think so, but for a stripped down, secure browser, a very valuable tool. Keep in mind that there are some in the developing nations (even in America) who do not have (or want) an up to the minute machine, and would welcome an OS that runs on a cheap old klunker, but is still versatile enough to gain access to the internet and email, w/java etc. etc. All in the familiar Windows environment. For the aces, Mindows will allow a tiny Windows install that may be gratifying in aiding the understanding of how Windows really works. Cheers --- Mike
  2. Thanks --- Is it necessary to go the bathroom? There is a guy working on a CD booted unattended installer. I'll get back in touch, and maybe with an augmented Mindows, we'll make this unattended gizmo a reality.
  3. Hi, as the instigator of the "Mindows Project" , I am wondering just what is meant by "unattended installation." In its present form, Mindows takes about 10 minutes to install, but prompts the installer (interrupts the installation process) at a few points to enter a few keystokes, and to provide the Product Key. All these interruptions can be defeated, but it seems to me that they can be endured for the time being, if not for eternity. Can anyone set me straight as to the meaning of "unattended" in this context? Incidentally, the next step will be to show how to put the installer on a CD, as well as how to eliminate the need for a "clean" disk for the installation. That will be followed by copying the installation to ramdisk, and finally running Mindows in ramdisk from a boot CD. abcxxyz
  4. : There is a new INF based installer available at : http://www.winimize.com Here is an excerpt from the home page: 10/11/05 --- New INF Based Installer now available ! No more file lists - this is a true installer, just like the standard Win98 setup.exe, but providing an installation of roughly 18 Meg, including networking capability. The whole setup takes about 10 minutes (!) once the setup directory has been formed. And this from the min98 page: Later I will provide instructions for making a boot CD that allows Mindows to be run from a ramdisk.
  5. Yes, and that's why I replied. THESE methods are FREE: http://www.etek.chalmers.se/~e8gus/nano98/ http://winimize.com/ http://scp.gmxhome.de/msdos71/ http://www.geocities.com/politalk/ http://www.lachiesadicristo.it/w98cd/page1.htm http://www.heise.de/ct/english/99/11/206/ Qualystem Rescue 1.2 Free Edition http://www.qualystem.com/en/download.html Of course, if you are looking for a FREE, completely automated tool like nlite is, I am afraid there is none I know of, each of the above needs some "work". jaclaz http://www.winimize.com now offers an INF based installer that is free, and sets up a tiny (18-20 Meg) installation of Windows. Much of the hardware on older machines is detected in the setup process. The whole installation process takes about 10 minutes, once the setup directory is built. Check it out.
