When I let windows xp look for the extracted driver on the disk, it says it doesn't "find a newer one" (which makes sense since it already has that version). Whenever I try to update the driver manually, I get an error. Usually "access is denied." It seems it doesn't want to update the driver. Deleting or uninstalling also gave an error "unable to uninstall" But then when I checked device manager again, the adapter was gone. Scanning for hardware changes did not bring it up again in device manager. But then I "loaded network support" from the network tab in Bart's PE and it did discover the adapter and it worked and reappeared in device manager (can access the Internet). However, any attempt to change my network settings (as I need to to access my other computers), brings up strange windows errors and a locked up bart's pe. Something strange is going on, but it was also true that the network driver did not load properly in the ERD Commander 2005 PE. I suspect it must have something to do with the i945 chipset software not getting installed or not getting installed in the right order, but perhaps there's another cause.

Thanks--I assume you mean see if it detects it in the PE environment? I'll go ahead and try booting then using Device Manager and selecting update driver under network adapter. But let me know if you want me to try a different procedure. By the way, it DID detect it before--or identify it? I'm going by the fact that the network adapter name, Intel Pro 100 VE, showed up on the BartPe network config dialog, the one that comes up automatically when booting from the PE cd. The problem apparently is that it does not suceed in loading the driver and it doesn't work.

Update: I tested out a different PE environment (Winternals ERD Commander 2005, without BTS driver packs.) I added only my mass storage driver and Intel network adapter driver to the ERD Commander 2005 cd (it doesn't allow one to add any other drivers--only storage and network). I discovered that the network adapter driver didn't load there either. Perhaps that's because it requires the Intel 945 chipset infs to load first (which ERD doesn't have) since the network adapter is integrated into the motherboard? (Note I told ERD not to "attach" to the xp installation existing on my hard drive, since it's xp x64 and ERD is not compatible with x64; I didn't want ERD to try to "repair" x64.) Could the order of loading in BTS be a problem (do the chipset infs fully install before the network adapters)? All I know for sure is that (1) everything works fine with the non-pe versions of xp (worked fine with my old 32-bit xp pro installation, and again works fine with my current x64 pro installation) and (2) the mass storage drivers work fine (which is very good since normally xp setup requires me to use F6 floppy installation). (Also the right video drivers are installed.)

Thanks for your help--I didn't expect a reply from the great BTS himself. **1. DRIVER PACK LIST WITH VERSIONS: I used all the most recent ones, except sound, as of 11/25/2005. BASE v. 5116 CHIPSET v. 5111 CPU v. 506 GRAPHICS A v. 511 (511--doesn't say 5111) GRAPHICS B v. 5111 LAN v. 511 MASS STORAGE v. 510 WLAN v. 511 Also, something called "driverpack Graphics Intel Extreme" dated 10/13/2005, put there by Ultimate Boot CD for Windows--the site said it's necessary on all installations using BTS drivers. It seems to have a list of programs in it not drivers. Probably I should leave CPU pack out since it's for AMD only; I have an Intel dual-core cpu and they have yellow question marks under PE + BTS. The only unusual thing is I have nearly 4 GB RAM. The graphics card and the ICH7 RAID / mass storage were correctly identified, but almost no other drivers were correctly loaded. The Intel® 537EP Data Fax Modem I think got misidentified as RAS something, and the Pro 100 VE network card was identified but did not get its drivers loaded according to device manager. Also, I have a USB keyboard and mouse--perhaps that interfered with the identification of the USB system and hence the chipset? **2. THE ORDER I CREATED CD: I used the Ultimate Boot CD for windows cd instructions: Ultimate Boot CD for windows, BTS Driver Packs, Bart's PE. Most of the instructions are here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3208 **3. HWID.TXT: I've attached the hwid.txt file deleted by moderator (and also copied it below). Note that hwid.txt was NOT generated in the PE environment (win xp 32-bit pe), since that's all yellow question marks, but in the xp x64 environment, where everything in device manager is nice and right (no yellow question marks). hwids.txt

I have a Dell 9100 system (nearly = xps 400), and am using all the BTS driver packs (except sound) + Ultimate Boot CD 4 windows + Bart's PE. The mass storage driver is working fine (correctly identified Intel ICH7 RAID chipset with RAID setup). But the network card, though correctly identified as an Intel Pro 100 VE (integrated), does not work (windows says "cannot load the driver" under device manager). Also, I notice a bunch of devices have question marks (Intel motherboard chipset info does not seem to have been loaded), which may explain the problem with the network card. Anyone have this problem or suggestions?

UltraVnc just posted 64-bit drivers but they're basically pre-beta. I haven't tried them out yet. Thanks on RemoteAssistance--I think that only works on request by the other user, it doesn't allow automatic log-in to the other user's desktop. So far Funk's Proxy is the only good solution I've found, until these other products come out in 64-compatible versions. I suspect not until Vista64 for most of them (UltraVnc should be ready earlier).

Thanks for the reply. I'm still not clear about this point: With remote desktop on the xp professional versions, if I log-in as the SAME user as the one at the remote desktop, does that mean both of us can use the desktop at the same time in a shared concurrent manner, seeing each other's changes and without disrupting the original session at all (like pcanywhere or vnc)?

(1) I tried pcanywhere 11.5, and it's unusable in x64 because it's too slow compared to x86 (when it does work). Is there any remote control software that works in x64? (I can't use the built-in Remote Desktop because it logs off the current user, and I need the current user not to be logged off.) ***I discovered today that Funk Software's Proxy comes in an x64-version that seems to work well. (2) Apparently Terminal Services on x64 *server* allows concurrent control by a remote and local user over a shared session (just like pcanywhere). Has anyone here used that and can confirm? (and that Remote Desktop x64, as in x86, does not allow that). Thanks.

Never mind, resolved problem--it looks like an issue with nlite and SATA driver integration. (Original post: I get this error trying to install x64 [mostly verbatim]: "Setup cannot format the partition. Your computer may not have enough memory to perform this operation [it sure does!] or your Windows Cd-ROM may contain some corrupted files [it sure doesn't--I verified those files byte by byte with the MSDN source files]." I thought it might be the SATA/RAID drivers, which I added to the CD, but Windows recognizes the drive, and has no problem creating and deleting partitions. It just doesn't want to format them. Any ideas?)

Okay, I see from another post that there is no x64 driver pack. I probably should reconsider installing x64, since it seems that even the more enthusiastic techie types haven't yet gotten around to doing a lot of work on it. (I only have 4 GB so I doubt it makes a big difference, except I would like to start coding for 64-bit.)
