  1. I had downloaded and ran Firetune to try to speed up Firefox. I thought maybe this was the problem. Fortunately you can store the default profile before making changes. I have since reset to the original profile but nothing has changed. The system still freezes. Any suggestions? Mark
  2. I have Win 2000 Pro with Office 2000 Pro. Some time ago I got a virus which was spotted by Grisoft AVG and ZoneAlarm. It took a while to clear as it had to be done in safe mode. I decided to move from SP3 to SP4 and add all the fixes beyond SP3 (I had SP4 before but it caused havoc with Office - BSoD!). I use IE6 with all the fixes to date, including Office fixes. Since doing this I have found that, sometimes and not on a regular basis, I click a link and the link does not open. The status bar states, "done". I can wait up to a minute and suddenly the link opens. The mouse operates and I can right click to get the desktop dropdown menu, but no response when I try to open a program or folder. When it unfreezes I get everything opening at once. Normally I was able to multitask, having AVG and an antispyware run in the background while I checked my mail. Now it seems that I can run fewer processes, but that may be imagination due to the freeze. I thought the problem could have been with ZoneAlarm so I shut it off (not recommended with broadband, I know) but it still occurred. I thought it might be IE6 so I installed Avant and Firefox but still the same. I then thought the problem was with Windows Explorer. I remembered that I am using Microsoft Antispyware (Beta 1), so that was turned off but still the same. Although the MS Antispyware may run background stuff when the main prog is not active. Has anyone heard of freezing like this happening recently? Mark
