  1. I have a 60 GB HD with three primary partitions with Win98SE, WinXP Pro SP2, Win 2000 Pro

and a extended partion, all in FAT32.

I launch the three OS with BootMagic.

Two weeks ago I copied the four partitions in a new 200 GB HD with Partion Magic 8.00,

    increasing their size.

After this, I set the new HD as Master Disk, and the old HD as Slave, for testing the new

partitons before formatting the old HD.

After this period, yesterday I tried to disconnect the old disk, and while Win98SE runs

well, launching Win XP I saw, with an heart attack, a black screen with a long message about

a "missing OS". I have an another problem with win2000, but it is not important because I

    can format it.

Lookig at WinXP Boot.ini, I saw these lines:

    [boot loader]

    timeout =10

    default =multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS

    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

    /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I thought that rdisk(1) aimed to the slave disk,

so I changed the word rdisk(1) to rdisk(0).

After this change WinXP starts, I can see the log in screen with the list of Users, I try to

write the administrator password, I see the message "connecting...." but after few seconds I

see the message "disconneting" and the OS shows again the same log in screen with the list of

users, without any other error message, and I cannot enter in the OS.

With a Dos boot floppy disk I have changed again rdisk(0) to rdisk(1) and I have reconnected the

old HD, but I don't know what to do now for using only the new disk, formatting the old one.

    Can anyone help me ?

Excuse me for my poor English. :blushing:

  2. I tried it on my XP box and it found the file, however I installed this reg hack. See if this makes a difference.

;Change Search Behavior - Enable searching of all file types

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex]

    "FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions"=dword:00000001

    you solved my problem :thumbup

    Many, many thanks

I was looking for a solution everywhere, but the people said "use this program ..." "use this other program ...."

    Thanks again

    Try the "findstr" command.

Thank for your answer, cluberti. I know the command "findstr", but it's a bit difficult task to use it. It's more easy the exrcizn's solution.

    Thanks again

  3. In Win98, searching a string of characters within PC files, I can find it regardless of the extension of the files. In WinXP I can find the string only in some type of files, and only if the structure of the file is correct for his extension.

For example, if I create the file "Test.txt" and I write the string "ABCD" in it, I can find "ABCD" with WinXP. But if I rename the file to "Test.xls", I cannot find the string with XP, but only with Win98.

There is a solution without using third party programs ?

    Thanks

    Sorry for my English :blushing:

  4. With the great helps of eidenk, erpdude8, Petr,

I've solved the bug in the item 'Find' and another bug in IE 6.1

The Italian users can read the solutions in the topic subforum 'IE 6.0 SP1 cannot open Https pages'.

If one of Italian users is able, can make a new debugged package reading the Petr's advice in the same subforum.

    Ciao :)

  5. This is not correct, many files are marked as English version even in international versions of Windows 98 SE. The best way is to check your original Italian CD-ROM what is the right language version. My first check based on language information stored in the files and my experience with other languages shows that you are missing the following files. Files that are marked as "Italian" in sesp201it are not included.

    Thanks for your help, Petr.

I' ve taken a look at the original Italian Win98SE CD.

Just as you said, many files are English version, and many Italian version.

So, if I understood your message correctly (I have got a little knowledge of these OS problems), the steps would be:

    1) I look at the files in sesp201it.exe :

2)I check that their language version is the same of the original Italian Win98SE CD

3)I check that their version number is the same of the Gape's sesp201en.exe

    4) If steps 2 or 3 are not true, I look for the correct language and number version with the help of the list of knowledge articles you kindly wrote.

But it's an hard task for me ( I'm too busy with my job :} ), so I'll send your great advices to the other Italian users, and I hope to find an user able enough to make a new pack debugged.

But now my OS seems to work without problems in both partitions.

    Many thanks, again :)

  6. see if the W98se pack 2.01 Italian has the correct version of the shell32.dll file in Italian, not English. that might be why the Find problem is happening. ALL updated files in the pack should be in italian unless a system file is noted "Language Neutral" in the file's properties sheet.

    Many thanks again erpdud8 ! :D

You have just centered the right solution of the problem 'Find'.

Just as you said, shell32.dll was English Version.

After downloading many files from Microsoft.com (about ten-twelve), I've found

in the upgrade 'q313829.exe' the file 'shel95.dll', italian version 4.72.3812.600.

I renamed it to shell32.dll, I' ve copied in c:\windows\system (after booting by a Dos Floppy), and now

the 'Found' item works correctly !!!! :thumbup

The program Dependency Walker is very useful for these tasks.

All of you are very expert in Microsoft OS, while I must learn more about them ( and more about English language  . In my previous message the word 'massage' :blushing: was one of my great errors ; I've corrected it ).

Now I have to look for the other English files in the Unofficial Windows98 SE Service Pack 2.0.1. italian and to replace them with the correct Italian version.

I think I'll send your solutions to the topic subform 'Windows 98SE Sp2.01 Italian' for the Italian users.

    Thanks again

  7. go job, lilliccu. I think the Unofficial Win98SE pack v2.0.1 Italian edition needs to be revised to include the newer Crypt32.dll file.

btw - version 5.131.1880.14 of the crypt32.dll file [uS English] is included in the english WinNT4 KB835732 [MS04-011] security patch. if you need to obtain that specific version of that file but in Italian, download the Italian version of the NT4 KB835732 patch from the Microsoft site. then extract the crypt32.dll file from the NT4 KB835732 italian patch.

Many thanks for your information: I found the italian version of crypt32.dll just in NT4 KB835732 italian patch.

It seems it works without problem.

But the Unofficial Win98SE pack v2.0.1 Italian needs to be revised for another serious problem: a bug in the item "Find" > "Files and directories": if you are interested, you can look at this subforum 'Windows 98SE Sp2.01 Italian' in one of the last message of mine.

    Thanks again :)

  8. Great Eidenk !!!!

I've tried to use Dependency Walker, and I think it's a great program !

I've had some difficulty to understand it, but now I say what I have discovered:

Dependency Walker showed a wrong dependency between "Initpki.dll", "Cryptdlg.dll" and "Crypt32.dll" in the partition where I had the problem (partition A). In this partition Crypt32.dll was Italian version 5.131.1877.5 .

In the partition where I haven't this problem (partition B ) the wrong dependency is not present, but Crypt32.dll is english version 5.131.1880.14.

Why is english Crypt32.dll present in partition B ?

Because before installing Unofficial Win98SE patch 2.0.1 Italian on partition B I've installed the english version of Unofficial Win98SE patch 2.0.1, and in the Italian Patch there is this older version of Crypt32.dll, incompatible (I think) with the upgrade.

So, by Dos I've copied Crypt32.dll from partion B to A, and now IE 6 opens https pages !!! :thumbup

Many thanks for your help !!! :thumbup

(sorry again for my English :blushing: )

  9. I' ve installed in two partitions the Italian version of Unofficial Windows98 SE Service Pack 2.0.1.

In a partition I have this problem : if I try to open https pages to write passwords, or to buy something by web, I see a white page with the title "Page cannot be found" (I translate from Italian language). But the SSL protocols are regularly marked by a check and IE seems to have the correct 128 bits protection.

I've tried to install again IE 6.0 SP1, but during installation I see alert messages about missing or corrupted "Initpki.dll" and "Cryptdlg.dll". But these dlls are correctly in windows/system, and they are equal to the dlls in the other partition.

    Can anyone help me ?

    Thanks.

    Sorry for my spaghetti-english :blushing:

  10. Sorry. Now i have not time to correct this bug that it's present in mine installation to.

I think is a wrong version of dll file. Try to replace with original english dll and report here.

    Thanks :blushing:

    Thanks for your answer :)

Yes, sorry for my question: which is the dll to replace ?

  11. Same here.  :(

    Ciao ! :)

    Thanks for your answer.

So, is not a problem of my PC only. Some Italian friends of mine have installed the english version (yes, the English version of the Unofficial SP over the Italian version of Win98SE) without any problem, but only with a little change in the Start > Programs items, and without this little bug.

I hope someone has an idea to solve this problem.

  12. First, the Gape' s UNOFFICIAL Windows98SE Service Pack is a great work.

I' ve installed in two partitions the Italian version of UNOFFICIAL Windows98 SE Service Pack 2.0.1 downloaded from http://rapidshare.de/files/1917359/sesp201it.exe.html .

In both partitions i have the same problem:

when I click on the item "Find" > "Files or directories" ("Trova" > "File o cartelle" in Italian language) I can write the name or the string to search, but the list of the files found, the result of the search, is not visible because it seems covert by the previous window.

    Can anyone help me ?

    Thanks

    sorry for my English
